Erich Neumann
Life & Work Website
“In every person, there is something exquisite, which exists in no one else. Therefore, one should honor everyone, in recognition of this hidden quality.”
“In reality, this actual world is full of secrets, just as it is full of the divine.”
“An infinite radiant world of revelation lies hidden in created reality.”
Erich Neumann lectured every year at the annual Eranos Conference in scenic Ascona, Switzerland between 1948 and 1960. His lectured, presented in German, formed the basis for his published essays. These were originally written as book chapters and later translated into English. After Jung's retirement as Eranos Conference leader in 1951,
Neumann took over this major role. He died suddenly from illness just a few weeks after his influential 1960 lecture on creativity.
“Every numinous experience, whatever form it may take, is…a charge of energy surpassing consciousness.”
Erich Neumann, Carl Jung, and Gershom Scholem (L-R) at Eranos.
“Whenever an encounter with the numinous takes place…a change takes place in the personality. This change… can be a momentary trance or a lasting transformation. It can take the form of an orderly process, or…a seemingly chaotic, directionless eruption."
Erich Neumann, Gershom Scholem, and others relaxing at Eranos.
About Erich Neumann
“It is necessary to develop the individual’s ability to carry on their dialogue with the divine-- so that their life, being determined by this connection, may be shaped and fulfilled.”
